Cutting the cost of fuel prices
With the price of petrol and diesel touching the £1 per litre mark making sure you get your fuel at the most competitive price is more important than ever! Fortunatly by doing a bit of shopping around you can easily shave nearly 10% off the price per litre.
Find out where your cheapest petrol station is - First thing to do is visit http://www.petrolprices.com you need to register on the website with some basic details, you then put in your postcode and the website will find the cheapest price for petrol, diesel and LPG within a 10 mile catchment of your postcode.
Loyalty Schemes - You can collect Nectar points each time you buy petrol at a BP garage, you get 4 points for evey £1 spend. Each point is worth a penny so in essence you are getting 4% cashback on your petrol. Nectar.com
You can collect Tesco clubcard points when you buy petrol at one of their petrol stations. You recieve 1 point for every £1 spend. Clubcard points can be comverted into ‘clubcard deals’ which are worth 4x as much, which works out as a 4% rebate on your fuel. You can take thi even further, if you apply for a Tesco credit card any pay for your fuel with that you receive 5 clubcard points for every £4 spent. The Tesco business credit card gives an automatic 2p off each litre plus clubcard points on top. (One thing to note is that you would need to pay your credit card balance off in full each month for this to be an effective way of buying your fuel, if you started paying interest on any balance it could become a more expensive way to buy fuel).
Asda have a similar credit card to Tesco provided you buy your petrol at an Asda petrol station with their credit card you will get 2p off each litre you buy.

Supermarket’s often run petrol promotions to get you into the shop to buy groceries, i.e spend £50 instore and get a voucher for 5p off per litre.
(one thing to note is that if you are travelling further than you normally would just to go to a supermarket petrol station, this may work out as a false economy as you are using more petrol to get there.)
Cashback credit cards - A cashback credit card pays a small amount back to you each time you make a purchase on it, it can be anything from 0.5% to 3%. As long as you pay the balance off in full each month you will save money on your fuel purchases. Cashback Credit Cards
Plus if you put the money you would spend each month on petrol into a savings account then take it back out at the end of the month to pay the petrol off on your credit card you will make money from the interest too!
