Low Cost Family Summer Fun
It’s not long until the summer holidays start and you hear those dreaded words, “I’m bored! What are we doing today?” Let’s face it, six or seven weeks is a long time to fill and can turn out quite costly.
Well, if you are holidaying in the UK or simply looking for a day out that won’t break the bank then here are some ideas.
National Trust for Scotland is doing a great deal just now for a Family Membership. If you take out a 12 month membership you get another six months free for £5.90 per month. This gives you free entry to over 100 sites throughout Scotland, including Culzean Castle (amazing for kids), for two adults and any children that live at the same address.
National Trust for England are offering an annual membership for £58.12, giving you 12 months for the price of 9 if you join online. They have some great sites including Lacock Abbey where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed.
If you join Historic Scotland you pay £70 for an annual membership for the family and you can visit over 70 sites across Scotland. Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle, being the flagship attractions. (You would pay £33 entry to Edinburgh Castle without membership for a family of four).
All of the above organisations organise special events throughout the year (free to members), usually have good parking and picnic facilities, cater for children of all ages and often you don’t have to queue for tickets (remember that if you visit Stirling Castle!!). Just be wary of the gift shops! Obviously these memberships last far longer than the summer holidays, so you can use them on Bank holidays and weekends too throughout the year.
Britain is the place for beautiful countryside and stunning beaches so, weather permitting, check out your local tourist board website for the best places to visit. And don’t forget to pack a picnic and emergency snacks!
For a rainy day have a snoop round a museum as many are free. Glasgow and Birmingham are just a couple of cities that boast free entry to all their museums (though some exhibitions may require a small entry fee, so watch out for that) and they put on weekend and holiday events for children and families.
