Mothers Day – Make your own extra special card

March 1, 2008 – 8:36 am

It’s easy to go out and buy a card, there are lots out there after all, but how much more special would it be if you made one for your mum instead.  Thinking to yourself that your no longer 8 and that a 35yr old making a card for their mum is a bit naff?  Trust me, ask ANY mother out there, and they will tell you that a card from their child that’s hand made is much better than a bought one no matter how old the ‘child’ is!  After all, in mum’s eyes you will always be their little girl/boy.

I’m not advocating that you go grab some crayons, glitter and glue (though you can if you like) It’s really easy these days to get creative on your computer and design and print your mum a card to be proud of.  You won’t spend a fortune on a card that way leaving you more money to treat your mum to something nice perhaps, and of course you can celebrate your mum being special this way without buying into the hallmark holiday side of things.

If you have a word processing package on your pc such as word, then you will find it already has built into it several templates for greetings cards, and from there you can add wordart, cartoon images, and even photo’s to make it special.  There are also lots of templates out there on the internet for more greetings card designs as well, and a lot of them will open in word so are perfectly compatible.  Microsoft has a selection of greetings card templates here.

This site here, has 4 designs for cards, and 1 for an envelope.  For best results it suggests you save them to your pc and use a graphics program to print it out.

If you don’t have a package already on your pc, you can still do your own card, there are lots of bits of software out there on the net that you can use.  Family Crafts site has a whole list of places that do this, with loads of different designs.  The southworth site (a paper site) has six different cards you can choose, obviously they advise you to use their own paper, but I’m sure as long as the dimensions of the paper are the same you could use pretty much any paper you have at home.

If you can, take the time to add your own touches to the card – include a picture of you and your mum together, or some other little touch that you know she will appreciate.  Then, when you are ready, choose your paper or thin card, and print your design onto it.  Print your envelope or choose a nice one if you already have a stash of them (I quite like to take an ordinary envelope and print a pretty image on to it, to make it really individual), and there you are, one perfect mothers day card, hand made by you especially for your mum.
